On May 16, Xiao Jianzhuang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Guangxi University(GXU), was invited to attend the 120th anniversary celebration ceremony of Vietnam National University, Hanoi(VNU). During his stay in Hanoi, he, together with other foreign guests, was warmly received byTo Lam, General Secretary ofthe Communist Party of Vietnam(CPV)Central Committee andStatePresident. At the celebration held at the Vietnam National Convention Center, To Lam delivered an important speech and awardedVNUtheFirst-Class Labor Medalin recognition of its outstanding contributions to cultivating high-quality talents, scientific research, innovation, and serving national development.

During the celebration, Xiao Jianzhuang briefed He Wei, Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam, on GXU’s exchanges with Vietnam in recent years.He highlighted that takingthe 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatictiesbetween China and Vietnam, as well asthe“China-Vietnam Year of People-to-People Exchanges”in 2025as an opportunity,the university has launched the“Red Study Tours”anddevelop the “Yucai Bond·China-Vietnam Friendship” people-to-people exchange brand,deepeningcooperation with Vietnam.AmbassadorHe Wei fully affirmed the achievements of GXU in educational exchanges with Vietnam and expressed hope that the university would leverage its geographical advantages to further advance educational exchanges with Vietnam.

Thatafternoon, Xiao Jianzhuang attendedthe scientific conference “From Indochina University to Vietnam National University, Hanoi: 120 years of elites training”,and delivered a speech as the sole representativeunitfromtheChinese side. He noted that GXU,as a frontier university for China’s opening-up and cooperation with ASEAN, has a special historical bond with Vietnam.Itis the site of the former Guangxi Nanning Yucai School(Vietnam Central School Zone), whichtrained about 7,000elites from all walks of lifefor Vietnam.In 1957, President Ho Chi Minhpersonallyvisitedthe formerGuangxi Nanning Yucai School andmadea speech.Itstands asa vividtestamentto the profound “comrades andbrothers” friendship between China and Vietnam.On April 17 this year,during his state visit to China,General Secretary ofCPVCentral Committee andStatePresident To Lam paid a special visit to GXUand hoped that the university would continue to serve as a bridge for knowledge and culture, deepen exchanges and cooperation with Vietnamese universities, cultivate more outstanding talents, and provide strong support for the development ofbothcountries.Currently, the university is fully promoting the upgrading and renovation of theGuangxi Nanning Yucai School Memorial Hall, striving to build it into an education base, academichub, and exchange platform forChina-Vietnamtraditional friendship.He stated that GXU and VNU share profoundhistorical tiesand long-standing friendship.Especially in recent years, the two universities have maintained frequent interactions, reached consensus onmatters such asartificial intelligence,doctoral training,andjoint education programs,yieldingfruitful cooperation.Going forward, theywill explore deeper cooperation injoint laboratory construction,educational resource sharing, and faculty-student exchanges,contributingmore wisdom and strength tothebuildingofChina-Vietnam community with a shared future.

During the forum, Xiao Jianzhuang held talks with Bui The Duy, Alternate Member of the CPV Central Committee and President of VNU. The two sides had friendlydiscussionson further strengthening semiconductor R&D cooperation, deepening faculty-student exchanges,and promoting the construction of Yucai School in new era,reachingconsensusandlaying a solid foundation for future exchanges and cooperation.

In recent years, GXU has earnestly implemented the spirit ofthecentral conference on work related to neighboring countriesand the requirements of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous RegionParty Committee,Government and Department of Educationregarding workwith Vietnam, maintaining close exchanges with VNU. In November 2025,GXUjoinedthe “Alliance for Semiconductor Industry TalentCultivation, Scientific Research Innovation and High-Quality Human Resource Supply”initiated by VNU. In April 2026, the two universities signed a Memorandum of Understandingon cooperationduring the“China-Vietnam Forum on Higher Education Cooperation and Scientific and Technological Innovation”,comprehensively deepeningbilateral cooperation.Founded in 1906, VNU is the first modern university in Vietnam. After its restructuringin 1993, it can report directly to the Prime Minister of Vietnam and coordinatewith various government ministries,enjoyingahighdegree ofautonomy invarious aspects such asacademics, scientific research, and international exchanges.Theuniversitycomprisesnine affiliateduniversities, includingVNUUniversity of Social Sciences and Humanities,VNU University of Science,VNU University of Engineering and Technology, etc. As the largestand mostcomprehensive university with thewidest range of disciplines in Vietnam,VNUholds a highly important and specialposition in Vietnam’s higher education system.
